Day 1: A Wing and a Prayer

4" x 11.5" x 1.5"

Twenty years ago, I started using art as meditation. As a young mom I felt inadequate. I turned to art as an outlet. I painted a piece with wings and a prayer for what I hoped would be my child's future.

I am so thankful I discovered the therapeutic benefits of art. I put thoughtful energy into every piece I work on. This work is a nod to that original epiphany.

Raku is a special firing process involving oxygen reduction. After being bisque-fired, glazed with specially formulated glazes, then heated again to 1850°, this piece was tossed red-hot into a reduction chamber. Where the piece was engulfed by hot flames, the color is different than the areas that were not touched. The process is chaotic and unpredictable, resulting in amazing, magical color combinations. The finish is a living surface. It will change with time. Keep this away from the sun to keep it as bright as long as possible.
